Sustained Investigation

Writing

How can I use lighting and perspective to create photos that dont seem real?  The first idea I had was to show the human body as a structure rather than as a living being. . Eventually I started leaning into more surreal photos after seeing YouTube videos on Liminal Spaces. I decided to take this idea of liminal spaces and put my own spin on it by using what I had, a few film cameras and an iPhone.

I started out shooting figures. I forced many of my friends to get into difficult positions or interesting locations. Eventually, I decided to focus my photographs more on the location rather than on the person in the photo if there even was a person. I ended up using a half frame camera (Kodak Ektar H35) to splice different spaces together or to change the orientation of the landscape in the middle of the picture. I belive these images feel unreal to me is because they either invoke nostalgia, have lighting that is uncommon to everyday life, or are shot from a perspective not often seen.
